London To New York Journey In 2.5 Hours?

An aerospace company, based in Denver has claimed that it can reduce the London to New York journey to 2.5 hours on a supersonic commercial airplane. The trans-atlantic journey normally takes around eight hours.

On Tuesday, a start-up company, Boom said at the Paris Air Show that the fast trans-atlantic journey would be possible within the coming six years, if the company is able to pass all the certification hurdles.

The company has also claimed to reduce the travel time between San Francisco to Tokyo to 5.5 hours, the travel time presently takes 11-hours.

Blake Scholl, Boom's founder and also chief executive, said that they are excited to provide the supersonic flights to commercial fliers, adding that the major airlines all across the world are also looking ahead for the same.

Boom has already received more than 70 orders from the five airlines for their supersonic passenger airlines.

It needs to be remembered that Concorde, which had offered the supersonic transatlantic flights earlier, had been closed down in the year 2003 due to the high airfares.

Concorde has become financially non profitable as its airfare was at $ 20,000. Concorde, the British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger jet airliner, could fly at a speed of twice the sound. However, Concorde continued flying for 27 years.

A sonic boom is the sound connected with the shock waves created by the object traveling through air faster than the speed of sound. Sonic booms generate a huge amounts of the sound energy, sounding similar to an explosion.

Many countries, including the US, do not allow the supersonic commercial flights over their land, because of these concerns.

However, Boom has claimed that the new flights are designed to minimize the noise and also it is working on getting the rules changed.

Boom has also claimed that better engine and also aerodynamic designs will greatly reduce the cost of operations when compared to the Concorde. Reports quoted that Boom states a business class ticket from the London to New York may cost as less as $ 5,000, which is one-fourth of the cost which Concorde used to charge.
