New York Attorney General Shuts Non-Profit Organization In Bronx

A non-profit organization in Bronx has been shut down by the New York Attorney General. An investigation by the Telemundo 47 Investiga and also WNYC Radio has revealed that the organization was selling bogus ID cards which promised protection from the deportation.

“A New Beginning for Immigrant’s Rights, Inc. must cease soliciting contributions, including through government grants, or engaging in any other fundraising activities in New York,” on Thursday, the Attorney General’s Charities Bureau said to the group’s founder Carlos Davila, in a letter.

The order comes in the wake of the Telemundo 47 Investiga / WNYC Radio investigation which found that Davila was selling bogus ID cards for $200 which he promised in the promotional video, that the federal authorities would stop from deporting the holder of the card.

Davila hedged on that promise when confronted by the reporters.

“We can’t say ICE isn’t going to touch you, but it’s a big possibility that they will not do what they do with other people, because they just arrest them. Now with this here they have insurance that they are protected. They know their rights,” he said.

The New York Congresswoman Nydia Valasquez has called the cards as “a total scam” in a letter to the Federal Trade Commission and also to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York, which said that “there is no difference between this card… and ‘know your rights’ handouts given out at immigration forums free of charge.”

Davila also said that the $200 for the cards was just an “initial payment” for the representation by A New Beginning for Immigrant’s Rights, that was legitimately accredited by the Department of Justice Board of Immigration Appeals to represent the people in immigration cases.

The non-profit organization’s federal status is currently under the review.
