MLS All-Star may Face Real Madrid this summer

MLS is setting to an agreement to face the Spanish giants ‘Real Madrid’ as its opponent for this summer’s All-Star Game in Chicago.

As of last week the deal has not been final yet, but an agreement is expected that would have the European champions play a team of league’s top players on August 2nd at Soldier Field.

If everything goes well, then Real Madrid would become the first ever Spanish club to participate in the event.

According to previous reports Real’s bitter rivals Barcelona were invited to play the MLS All- Stars. But negotiation between MLS and the Catalonia side broke down after the club had some additional requests.

Before the summer’s MLS All Star game, there is a major FIFA event ‘ the Confederations Cup’ in which many Real players would be participating. But the players would have 31 days between the final which is on July 2nd and the game in Chicago.

In 2014, Bayern Munich players like Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer had won the FIFA World Cup with Germany just 24 days earlier. But they had to arrive Portland hours before the All-Star match as they were contractually obligated to take part.

This year’s All Star match will be the 13th consecutive midsummer classic in which the league’s top players meet an international club.
Last summer an MLS “select” team lost to Real Madrid 5-0 at their home ground Santiago Bernabeu.

In past eight summers Real Madrid has played seven times in the United States, but not even once they have been to Chicago since Chivas Guadalajara in July 2005. In 2014 Real Madrid faced Premier League’s Manchester United in Michigan with over 105,000 spectators at the stadium.

Last summer Arsenal beat the MLS All stars 2-1 in San Jose, California. In recent years MLS has hosted clubs, like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Manchester United, Roma and Tottenham.

In 2012 MLS All-Star beat Chelsea who were the defending champions at that time.

Real Madrid won its record 11th European title last June. The 32-time Spanish champion currently sits one point above Barcelona at the top of the table in La Liga.
