The New York Post published nude photographs of Melania Trump, wife of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on its front page. The photographs were taken during her modelling days in the 1990s.

The city tabloid said "You've never seen a potential First Lady like this," on its front page below a nude photograph of Melania. Adding to this, the paper added the  "some rarely seen and others never published" pictures were taken in Manhattan for a photo spread for a now-defunct French men's magazine during a shoot in 1995.

The pictures were shot by French photographer Ale de Basseville. Slovenian-born Melania was then 25 years old and known by her professional moniker Melania K.

Trump told The Post regarding the photographs, that, "Melania was one of the most successful models and she did many photo shoots, including for covers and major magazines. This was a picture taken for a European magazine prior to my knowing Melania. In Europe, pictures like this are very fashionable and common."

Ale de Basseville said that, "Melania was super-great and a fantastic personality and she was very kind with me."  "I was quite surprised when I saw the pictures because it was a racier shoot than I expected," he said.

"But Melania seemed very comfortable with the whole thing, and she was very professional," De Basseville said the photos "show the beauty and the freedom of the woman, and I am very proud of these pictures because they celebrate Melania's beauty."

Key adviser to Trump Jason Miller said that, "They're a celebration of the human body as art." "There's nothing to be embarrassed about," Miller said. "She's a beautiful woman."

The New York billionaire and Melania wed in 2005 in a ceremony at Trump's resort in Florida.
