Lebanon Environment Minister Resigns in the Wake of Beirut Explosion Protests

Earlier, Lebanese Information Minister Manan Abdel Samad announced her resignation after the protests triggered.

Lebanese environment minister, Damianos Kattar has announced resignation from the post on Sunday in the wake of the deadly explosion that happened in Beirut and subsequent protests that engulfed the country. Severe civil anti government protests are taking place in Beirut since the tragic incident that took many lives.

According to media, the country’s Prime Minister Hassan had requested the environment minister to continue his stint but all his efforts went in vain.

On the same day earlier, the Lebanese Information minister Manan Abdel Samad has also resigned from her post after the sever protest have started against the government.

On Saturday, thousands of people took to streets to protest against the government and demanding the ministers to resign from their posts. Protestors have stormed four ministers and some bank associations.

Late on Tuesday, a massive warehouse explosion took place in Labanese capital Beirut sending devastating blast waves across the city. The incident has killed about 100 people and 4000 people were injured.

Several rescue workers were seen digging through the wreckage of the buildings to rescue people. The government said that many more casualties can be found from the next day of the blast. The explosion happened at a port warehouse that had explosive material in it.

The blast was the most powerful one ever to have ripped Beirut over, a city which is still scarred by the civil war that happened three decades ago. Beirut is also dealing with economic meltdown and a surge in coronavirus cases.

Prime Minister Hassan had told the media that the country is dealing with real catastrophe and had urged all countries and friends to extend some help to the nation. The cause of explosion at a warehouse near the port of Beirut is due to the presence of 2700 tons of ammonium nitrate presumably.

The Prime Minister also declared the day of mourning for the people who have lost their lives due to the blast and promised accountability to the families.

Ammonium nitrate is commonly used for agricultural purposes in agriculture and also as an ingredient in making explosives.

After the Beirut incident, India’s southern state capital Chennai has issued red alert in the Customs port house as it contained about 700 tons of ammonium nitrate. However, the load is shifted to another place in the nearby hill station where there is no residential area.
