UN rights body Slams India about deportation of Rohingyas

UN Human Rights Council takes a hit on India over its threat to deport 40,000 Rohingyas, cow vigilantism and the recent murder of Senior journalist Gauri Lankesh at 36th Session of the council in Geneva on Monday.

Earlier this year, the UN body had slammed India on its rising Communism, caste violence and attacks on Africans beside criminalisation of same sex relationships.

On 36th session, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zied Ra’ad Al Hussein has criticized New Delhi’s current measure to deport Rohingyas “at a time of such violence against them”.

While New Delhi didn’t make any official comments on the issue, India believes that it is taking a balanced approach to the Rohingya issue in Myanmar which is more than a Humanitarian approach. The troubles began when Rohingya militants under the group ARSA attacked Myanmar security forces. India has promised large investments in development of the troubled Rakhine state, which is home to many Rohingya.

Zeid critisied the statement of Kiren Rijiju minister of home affairs that India can dispense with International Law, together with basic human compassion.

The human rights chief pointed out that “India cannot carryout Collective expulsions, or return people to a place where they risk torture or other serious violations”, he also expressed his dismay over “ A broader rise of intolerance towards religious and minorities in India”.

He condemned violent mob attacks in the name of cow protection. He also talked about murder of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh, he said that he felt heartened with subsequent marches calling for protection of the   right to freedom of expression.
