New Jersey Grandfather Relieved From Deportation

A New Jersey grandfather has been relieved from deportation. Catalino Guerrero, who is an undocumented immigrant, would not have to go back to Mexico after spending two dozen years in the United States.

The official notice of a one-year extension was granted to him at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Newark. Guerrero’s wife Margarita, who was told for the first time to report there, was also allowed to stay in United States.

Guerrero hugged his children and also grandchildren outside the building afterward.

His attorney Cesar Estela said that, Guerrero had a quiet embrace when they learned about the news.

Now the real work gets started, said Estela, referring to the long process to get the two green cards in the United States.

In the last month, Guerrero had gone to the same building flanked by the Sen. Robert Menendez and Cardinal Joseph Tobin to turn himself in, not knowing whether he would be deported. Supporters flanked Guerrero as he walked into the building.

Guerrero’s young granddaughter told to News 4 in tears at the time, "He has a part in my life and if he goes away, that part of my life will break."
