Indian Athlete in US Charged for Abusing a Minor-Girl

An athlete from India, who competed at the recent World Snowshoe Championship in New York after struggling to obtain a visa, is being accused of sexually abusing a local girl.

Police said that Tranveer Hussain, 24, from Kashmir was also charged with endangering the welfare of the child.

Sergeant Casey Reardon of Saranac Lake Village said that the girl and her parents reposed the abuse to police. Police said that the incident occurred on Monday in the village at Adirondack Mountains.

According to a statement issued by police the charges were Hussain "engaging in a passionate kiss" with a 12-year-old victim. There was no accusation of force, and no other allegations were made.

Hussain was in prison on Thursday for 5,000 USD cash bail. His attorney entered a not-guilty plea for him.

His attorney, Brain Barrett said due to the limited communication with his client, he has not been able to properly evaluate the case.

Hussain and the president of the Snowshoe Federation of India Abid Khan ran into a roadblock while traveling to the race.

Their initial visa applications were denied around the same period, when Donald Trump signed the executive order banning people from seven Muslim countries from entering the U.S., even though India was not one of those countries.

Mayor Clyde Rabideau of Saranac Lake reached out to U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand for help, while the seventh graders from Saranac Lake Middle School wrote letters to the senators on behalf of the two Muslim men.

Both were allowed to resubmit their visa applications, which were approved and they arrived in Saranac Lake on February 23.

Hussain and Khan spoke to the students of middle school on February 24, showed them footage’s of Kashmir and its winter recreation, and received some of the biggest cheers at the opening ceremonies.
