City Council Supports Sanctuary City Order

The City Council of New Jersey unanimously approved a measure expressing the support for last week's executive order designating Jersey City as a sanctuary city, with the Council President Rolando Lavarro saying that the action will "send a resounding message" to the President Donald Trump.

Choking back the tears and quoting from the Bible, Lavarro said that he is angry about Trump's recent actions targeting the illegal immigrants and refugees.

This measure, called the "fair and welcoming Jersey City resolution," also expresses support for creating the municipal ID program, establishing a policy requiring the city to report how many times it is asked to participate in the immigration enforcement operations and more.

Trump has threatened to strip the federal funding from sanctuary cities. Lavarro has said he does not think that would be legal.

The council's action was met with a partial standing ovation from group of people in the audience who had come to the meeting to pressure the council members to vote in favor. A chant of "no ban, no wall, sanctuary for all" broke out shortly after the unanimous vote by the city council.

Councilwoman Candice Osborne said that, "it's really encouraging to see such a united, diverse group of Jersey City residents who echo the values that our entire city has. I'm proud of all of you."

A federal judge last week suspended the Trump's order that restricts the travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States, leading to a showdown in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

Trump said that, today the nation is "at risk" because the order has been suspended.
