Gurbir Grewal, (42) a Sikh American attorney has been selected as the top prosecutor in Bergen County of New Jersey. He has become the first South Asian, who is named as top prosecutor in the State. He was sworn in as prosecutor of the Bergen city on January 4. He succeeded John Molinelli who completed his 14 year long tenure.

Recently, he worked as the chief of the Economic Crimes Unit in Newark. Earlier, He served as a former federal prosecutor and prosecuted numerous white collar crimes for the Attorney’s office, as reported by NorthJersey.com. Report said that, Mr. Grewal aims to work to develop and improve the reputation of his office.

During his swearing-in ceremony, he told that, he “cares deeply” about the county and is “deeply committed to the public service.” He added, “I want to spend my time here just seeing how I can make this an even better place.” He expressed his appointment as an “honour and privilege” and said that the office of the Bergen County prosecutor is in “many real ways sets the standard for other prosecutor’s offices throughout the State.” Also, he was sworn in as an assistant attorney general of Trenton by the State attorney general John Hoffman.

Mr. Grewal said that, I hope to prove to you over the next several years and maybe more, that I am a quick learner, I am a hard worker, and I will always be straightforward,” reported NorthJersey.com.

He was nominated for the designation by Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey in 2013, but the hearing on the appointed was delayed by the Senate. Christie said, a change was “ long overdue”, as the replacement of Mr. Molinelli announced.
