Archaeologists have discovered an ancient Maya city that continued in the same state secret for centuries in the rain forests of eastern Mexico, a discovery in a remote nature reserve they hope will furnish clues about how the civilisation collapsed around 1,000 years ago. The team, led by Mr Ivan Sprajc, associate professor at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, explored 15 pyramids inclusive of one that stands 23m tall having ball courts, plazas and tall as well as sculpted stone shafts called stelae.

Mr Sprajc explained that the city was known to be named as Chactun, meaning "Red Rock" or "Large Rock." and it was likely slightly less populous than the large ancient Maya city of Tikal in Guatemala, at the same time could have been home to as many as 30,000 or 40,000 people, though further research is necessary to ascertain a prominent estimation.

Mr Sprajc added that Chactun likely had its period of greatest vigor during the late Classic period of Maya civilization linking 600 and AD900.

History has always offered a mystery!
